A Year with XLP; Lizzie's Story

Throughout this year, I have had the privilege of working in four schools.

This has involved weekly mentoring at two schools, assemblies at a third school and a one-off lesson for year 6s at a local primary school. Because of the diverse nature of these opportunities, I have had the chance to work on a variety of skills, such as pastoral support, behaviour management, public speaking, teaching and organisation -just to name a few.

I’ve also had the opportunity to work with students of different ages and different backgrounds. Some of my mentoring has been helping students for whom English is not their first language. I studied foreign languages at university, and so I was able to apply some of these methods and some of my understanding of how to learn a foreign language.

The mentoring was on a 1:1 basis, so I had the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and get to know the young people well.

Over the year, I’ve seen the young people grow in their linguistic ability, behaviour and being able to cope with difficult situations. Being part of young people’s journey has been such a privilege and seeing them improve has been an absolute joy!
